At Nightwalk, I rank films and television from worst to best, focusing on quality, execution, and how well a work holds up when placed beside its peers.

This isn’t about box office numbers, awards, or aggregate scores. It’s about comparison. How one film stacks up against another. How a season compares to what came before it.

Ranking is an expression of our personality and individuality.

Why Rank Film and Television?

Film and television are rarely experienced in isolation.

We compare:

One director’s films against the rest of their catalog
Seasons within the same TV series
Films in a franchise
Films within a genre or era

Rankings reflect how we think about movies and shows relatively, not absolutely.

A review asks whether something is good.
A ranking asks how good it is compared to everything else like it.

How I Rank TV Shows and Movies

Every ranking here is subjective, but as consistent as possible. I apply my same lens across films, series, and seasons, even when the criteria shift slightly by format.

When ranking TV and film, I consider:

Narrative strength – structure, pacing, and payoff
Direction and vision – how clearly the creative intent is executed
Performance – acting that elevates or undermines the material
Cohesion – how well the elements work together as a whole
Longevity – rewatch value and cultural staying power
Visuals – how the film is brought to life through visual elements
Emotional Impact – how the work inspires us to feel
Ancillary elements – things like soundtrack, or set design

Subjective by Design

These rankings reflect my experience — what resonated, what faltered, and what earned its place.

That means:

No obligation to follow critical consensus
No reliance on scores or awards
Room for opinions to evolve over time

Disagreement with me isn’t a flaw here — it’s expected. Rankings invite debate, re-evaluation, and comparison. A film can move up or down years later, once distance and context set in.

And elements such as how scary a movie is or how funny it is are truly subjective, which is why our ranking of the top 10 scariest movies is likely our most divisive topic yet!
