The Backstory

Maps in the Dark was – I don’t want to use the term rushed… made very quickly! In the wake of the sudden success of the Nightwalk YouTube channel, I found myself more inspired than ever to write, produce, and get content out for my many new viewers!

It was a bit daunting in some ways too. When I released The Abyss I must have had under 5 subscribers on my YouTube channel, so now that I had suddenly exploded, I felt a lot of pressure to perform.

And while these first two albums are definitely uneven, they have some huge highs. I definitely had started to build my vocals a bit more, and my capacity to write and produce had skyrocketed. Let’s discuss some key tracks below!

One fun tidbit is that I paid the YouTuber ARTV on Patreon to review this album. I think he gave it a 6/10, but he’s since unlisted the video. Love ya, Jon!

Key Tracks

Not Tonight

This is probably my poppiest song I’ve ever done – at least the best pop-centric song I’ve done! It focuses around a tight bass groove and is really catchy. While it’s not quite as intricate as some of my best songs, I am a huge fan of pop music and will not scoff at a solid jam!

I’ll Be Anything

This is one of my favorite ballads I’ve done. I love the bond-esque feel of it, and how it slinks around throughout the runtime.

Higher and Higher

To this day, this is one of the best choruses I’ve written. I love the riff soooo much, I mean just take a listen to it! The vocals make way to make the riff the real hero of the chorus, and each takes turns handing over the spotlight.

The Narrator

A short but sweet melancholic, epic song. One of the best aspects is how it drops to let the strings and the subtle reverb have space to shine.
